Driving With Zero Carbon Emissions

California-based startup Hyperion has developed a hydrogen powered car, called Hyperion XP-1, that packs 2,000 hp and has a range of more than 1,000 miles.  Still a prototype, the h-car is a spectacular vehicle with a highly unusual, futuristic design and distinctive, unconventional proportions.  For example, the vehicle has Bugatti-style adjustable blades covered with solar panels.  Hyperion not only has a distinctive hydrogen hypercar;  but also, it plans to build a network of hydrogen fill-up stations. The stations will deploy NASA refueling technology to keep fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) powered and on the move. 

Hydrogen's Advantages and Tech Specs

Hydrogen offers drivers a huge advantage. It takes only 5 minutes to fill up the hydrogen tanks and off you go with zero carbon emissions driving.  The Hyperion XP-1 powertrain contains hydrogen fuel cells and 4, axial-flux electric motors that send power to all 4 wheels.  The vehicle has capacitors instead of batteries and a 3-speed transmission. The FCEV pumps out more than 2,000 hp and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds.  It is relatively lightweight at 2,275 pounds with its titanium-reinforced body, carbon-titanium structure, aluminum alloy suspension and no big battery pack.  Hyperion anticipates building 300 of the vehicles in the US for sale.  The price hasn't been disclosed.

Hydrogen Refueling Stations

To jumpstart the hydrogen car market, Hyperion intends to build a network of refueling stations for both hydrogen and battery electric vehicles.  The company says the stations will also be capable of providing utility grid support for emergency situations and to back-up power systems.  For more news stories like this, Latest Innovations For Tomorrow
