  • Scientists from the University of California Davis, SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA and the Alaskan Whale Foundation claim to have had the first real conversation between humans and whales in the whales' own language.  Here's what we know:
  • The scientists broadcast a call through underwater speakers to a humpback whale named Twain
  • The calls deployed were from other whales
  • When the humpback whale heard the call, it approached the boat and responded with a greeting call
  • As scientists adjusted the frequency of the greeting call, the whale adjusted the frequency of its responses
  • Scientists concluded the whale Twain was enjoying an interactive conversation
  • Whales are highly intelligent with sophisticated communications systems
  • Upshot:  the scientists hope to use their findings to pave the way for conversations with aliens someday, whose means of communications we also won't understand!
  • My hope is they also start using it on many other animals here on Earth, that would be fabulous to have conversations with and know what they're thinking about us and the world around them.
