  • Have you ever wondered what your dog, like my Smooth Fox Terrier Win, is trying to communicate when the dog tilts its head & gives you the cutest expression, while you're talking to her?  New science tells us the dog is curious & attentive to what you're saying & is likely in the upper quadrant of really smart dogs. The co-founders of the Center for Canine Behavior Studies, which includes a Professor Emeritus at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, have done extensive research & provide new insights into decoding your dog's facial expressions.  Here are some key examples:
  • Tongue out - can mean dog is feeling relaxed and happy if coming from semi-closed mouth
  • Nose wrinkling - contracted facial muscles and wrinkled nose can mean dog irritation and potential aggression
  • Lip licking - especially with closed eyes can indicate stress
  • Avoiding eye contact - can mean they want to avoid conflict
  • Staring - can mean your dog loves you; but if hackles accompany it, this could be a challenge
  • Whale eyes - could be a sign of fear
  • Smiling - Can mean a happy dog with tongue protruding outside of a semi-closed mouth, soft eyes and ears flopping to the side
  • My little Win just turned 2 years old and puts nothing but a smile on my face.  She's a good & smart dog who loves to please, especially for treats! She has taught me well!!
