Growing EV Fight Against Climate Change Source:  Israeli Electric Transit Buses US Looks to Invest Billions in Electric School Buses Israel is making a hard push for the use of electric vehicles as part of its fight against climate change.  The number of electric cars rose by 132% in 2020 in Israel.  Hybrid vehicles are at 223,600, which is 6% of all motor vehicles.  Now the government of Israel is tripling the number of electric buses for zero emissions public transportation. It just allocated more than $18 million for the purchase of 220 electric transit buses.  The new buses will be in service in nine cities, including Israel's big cities like Tel Aviv.  Meanwhile in the US, the Biden Administration has filed legislation for $25 billion to make America's fleet of school buses fully electric.  It's part of President Biden's $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan.  Clearly, buses are now being targeted for causing big pollution problems.   5 Minute Charge                                                                      Source:  StoreDot New Battery Invention from Israel Startup One of the biggest obstacles to the widespread use of electric cars is the time it takes to recharge the battery.  In most cases, it takes hours and that leads to what is called "battery range anxiety".  Israeli startup StoreDot has the solution.  It has developed a highly advanced car battery that can be recharged within five minutes.  The invention is a world first and a potential gamechanger for the electric car industry. Next Steps Toward Commercialization The industry itself will have to catch up to the battery. The ultra fast charge requires much higher power chargers than are currently in use.  Charging stations need to be upgraded to enable widespread commercialization of the new invention.  It makes a recharge as quick as filling a car with gas. Big Investors Behind StoreDot StoreDot has the financial backing of several gl

REE Electric Vehicle System:  Engines Directly in the Wheels Source:  R3E Increases Efficiencies and Cuts Costs REE, an Israeli start-up based in Tel Aviv, aims to reimagine the future of electric vehicles.  They've developed potentially disruptive technology that enables a completely different way of building electric vehicles.  They've created a completely flat and modular chassis.  That allows all engine components to be put directly next to the wheels and below the body of the car.  The design reduces weight and space and increases efficiencies.  Essentially, the team has developed a new electromobility platform that works across models from powerful cars to 10 ton trucks. Skateboard Chassis REE calls it a skateboard chassis.  The modular design puts the engine, suspension, steering, electronics, powertrain, brakes and other components right next to the wheels. This fundamentally changes the way cars are built.  Furthermore the system is lightweight,

Protecting Connected Vehicles from Hackers Source:  Upstream Israel's Upstream Security Secures Millions in Funding Israel's Upstream Security has secured $30 million in funding to develop software to protect connected and autonomous vehicles from cyberattacks by hackers.  The funding is coming from automakers like Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Volvo Truck, Nationwide Mutual Insurance and venture capital firms. Upstream takes a cloud based automotive cybersecurity approach using data analytics and machine learning algorithms.  The company was established in 2017 and has received a total of $41 million in funding. New Software Market with Exponential Growth The market demand for software to protect against automotive cyberattacks is expected to reach $2.3 billion by 2025. The exponential growth is being driven by the fact that the more connectivity included in vehicles, the more vulnerable they are to hackers.  Cyber carjacking has been an issue since 2015

Sweden's Wave-Solar Energy Device

Smart, Haptic Vest for Dogs

Image
New Human-Canine Communications Source:  Ben Gurion University Wireless, Remote Controlled Dog Vest to Guide the Dog Engineers at Ben-Gurion University in Israel have invented a haptic vest for search and rescue, military and service dogs.  It enables the handlers to direct the animal even when they are out of sight or out of vocal range.  Haptic technology simulates the sense of touch and motion.  The system operates by wireless remote control. Remote Controlled Guidance and Commands The team used a standard dog vest and placed four, small motors inside that operate by remote control.  They vibrate against the dog's back and sides.  The dog is trained to understand the vibrations and respond properly to them.  It enables the animal to be guided remotely. Proof of Concept The team calls the haptic vest a "proof of concept" that shows very promising results.  They say it opens the way toward using haptics as a new form of human-canine communications.  In their
