Lots of Buzz About This Concept

Volkswagen is ready to unveil its much-anticipated electric, microbus vehicle.  It's called the VW ID. Buzz.  The official unveiling of the electric production version of the concept, that was first shown five years ago, will happen in about two weeks for the European version of the Buzz.  Production starts this coming summer, and it launches for sale in Europe in the fall.  It will be offered in Europe as both passenger and cargo models on what Volkswagen calls a short-wheelbase chassis of 2988 mm (9.8 feet).  In 2023, a longer model with three rows of seats will be sold in the US.

Tech Specs

An electric motor in the rear of the microbus cranks a peak output of 201 hp. (150 kilowatts).  A lithium-ion battery of 77 kWh stores the electric energy. There are indications that VW may add a more powerful dual motor version. Buzz is built on the Modular Electric Drive platform (MED) and the vehicle shares component parts with the ID.3 and ID.4.  The maximum speed is 90 mph.  There's no data on the EV's range as of yet.

VW Bus With Roots

The passenger version of the Buzz can accommodate five people and also carry 1121 liters of cargo.  The cargo version can carry 3 people and a cargo load of 1900 liters.  VW is offering a lot of customization options for customers.  There also will be standard over the air updates for the vehicles.  Of note, the Buzz has bi-directional charging that allows the owner to store excess energy from their home's solar panels in the vehicle and to feed the energy back to the home. The official unveiling of the Buzz happens on March 9.  But this "retro" vehicle, with roots that go back to the first VW bus of 1949, is already getting a lot of buzz.
