Boating That's Good For the Environment

Stockholm-based Candela has developed an electric hydrofoil speedboat that is a technological wonder.  It glides above the water's surface in a silent, environmentally safe and zero emissions way.  Unlike gas powered boats, there are no pollutants contaminating pristine waterways and their surrounding ecosystems. The company is expanding internationally and just signed a partnership in New Zealand with Next Generation Boats to sell its innovative e-boats there.  The island nation has one of the highest per capital uses of boats in the world and a large number of pristine harbors, lakes and estuaries, which are just the types of water environments that Candela is designed to protect.

Highly Advanced Foil Technology

Candela's electric hydrofoil speedboats are low impact and ecofriendly.  The Candela C-7 speedboat can hit speeds of 30 miles per hour and is priced at $300,000.  The boat takes off from the water as its computer-controlled hydrofoils lift the boat more than a foot above the surface for travel by extremely low flying and wave gliding.  Their newest boat the C-8 is larger and more technologically advanced.  It has what is being called a revolutionary C-POD drivetrain and a pair of rotating electric motors built directly into the hydrofoil. The C-POD provides 50 kW (67 hp) and is said to be able to go 4,000 hours without any maintenance.

Technology Details

The boats fly on computer stabilized underwater wings or hydrofoils.  Once on the foils, the C-8 can travel 2 to 2&1/2 hours at speeds of 20 knots and can cover 50 nautical miles.  The onboard computer adjusts the vessel for pitch, roll and height in response to waves, wind and people moving around onboard.  It uses 80% less energy than conventional boats and spews no emissions.

Business Plan

Candela is growing both its product lines and international markets.  It is working on passenger ferries and water taxis.  Its upcoming Candela P-30 ferry will become the world's first electric hydrofoil passenger vessel when it starts operations in Sweden in 2023.  These new electric hydrofoils are an exciting new form of green travel that is emissions free, low impact on water ecosystems and great for the environment.
