China's Breakthrough Aviation Innovation

China is developing the world's largest amphibious plane - the AG 600 - that literally skis on water.  This aircraft is both strategically and technologically significant.  Geopolitically, it will extend China's maritime coverage throughout the entire South China Sea. That is one of the richest fishing areas with untapped oil and natural gas reserves that other nations, including the US, are attempting to preserve and protect the rights of nearby island nations. It is also breakthrough aviation technology that combines a huge aircraft with a huge boat.  It is 121 feet long with a 128-foot wingspan.  It has already successfully undergone 100 hours of scientific flight testing and is about to undergo more flight tests.

Aviation History

When deployed, the AG 600 will make aviation history as the world's largest amphibious aircraft.  It's the size of a Boeing 737.  It can carry 50 passengers, fly nonstop for 12 hours and cruise at 310 mph.  It can take off and land on both water and land.  Experts say that it is not combat ready.  China says it will use the vessel for search and rescue, firefighting, maritime patrols and for transporting passengers and cargo. 

Unique Combination Boat & Plane

The AG 600 combines a boat underneath the massive aircraft to allow it to land and "ski" on water.  When landing on the ground, a front nose wheel emerges from the boat portion and rear wheels emerge from the fuselage.  China wants to use this new, unique vehicle for firefighting.  When it lands and skis across the water, it collects 12 tons of water in just 20 seconds.  That water could be used to fight fires over a 4,000 square mile area.

More Flight Testing
