Could Radically Change What Cars Are Made of

Citroen's new electric concept vehicle Oli is a sporty, funky, fun lightweight pickup truck that's made from recycled honeycomb cardboard and other recycled and recyclable materials.  That has to be an automotive first.  According to Citroen executives, it is designed to be affordable, sustainable and built on the principle "the less you weigh, the less you consume".  The automaker says it equipped Oli with "just enough of everything" to really keep the weight down and the driver and passengers happy.  The EV weighs 2.204 pounds and the 40-kWh battery provides a range of 248 miles on a charge. It can recharge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes. Citroen hasn't provided power figures or the number of electric motors that the EV has. But Oli's maximum speed is 68 mph. The boxy EV harkens back to the company's founding in 1919 with the founder's original purpose of making lightweight quality cars.

Very Green Vehicle

Oli is said to be greener than any Tesla.  It is designed as part of the effort to fight Climate Change by using recycled and recyclable materials. The body style is unconventional and playful with a vertical front windshield and suicide doors for easy access to the colorful cabin. The front is grill-less, and touches of infra-red paint adorn the windshield frame, wheel caps and cabin.  There are C-shaped LED headlights and taillights.  The interior is bright but minimalist with a single screen for information called Smartband on the bottom of the windscreen.

Next Steps

This unique concept electric pickup truck is getting rave reviews and there are calls for it to be put into production.  Citroen is considering putting it into production and adds that many design aspects will be in future Citroen vehicles.  Citroen is now a subsidiary of Stellantis which targets selling only battery electric new cars by 2028.  Other automakers are also building cars by using recycled materials.  Examples include BMW's iVision Circular small EV and Fisker's Ocean.  The Citroen Oli is a brilliant new concept that may be part of the greener future of travel.
