DARPA'S REVOLUTIONARY NEW PLANE

  • DARPA, the US Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency, is developing a plane unlike any other in aviation history.  It uses Active Flow Control (AFC), which is virtual control surfaces made from air.  Here are the facts:
  • This is an aviation first
  • Since the Wright Brothers, every aircraft has used moving control surfaces to change the plane's shape during flight and alter its aerodynamics
  • DARPA's CRANE, or Control of Revolutionary Aircraft with Novel Effectors, uses bursts of compressed air, instead of exterior control surfaces, to control's the plane's yaw, fetch and roll
  • Why:  DARPA wants to cut the plane's weight, improve its efficiency and performance, hold more fuel and eliminate moving exterior parts
  • The technology has been successfully tested in wind tunnels
  • DARPA just awarded a Phase 2 development contract to Virginia-based Aurora Flight Sciences to move the project forward
  • Crane will use Active Air Flow (AFC) with nozzles that blow out controlled bursts of air
  • Current prototype has capability to travel at Mach 0.7 or 537 mph
  • Flight testing is possible in 2025
  • DARPA is an innovation giant with the creation of the internet and GPS among its many accomplishments.
INNOVATIVE TECH FASHION - DOMINO'S PIZZA SUIT

  • Pizza delivery giant Domino's has created a wearable "heat suit" for people to keep warm in the cold.  It contains Domino's patented pizza delivery box insulating technology.  Here's what we know:
  • If you want to stay as toasty as a pizza in freezing weather and get some comical side-glances as well, Domino's Heat Coat is the one for you
  • It contains Domino's innovative "hot bag" technology first introduced in 1998 to ensure the delivery of piping hot pizza to your door and has been upgraded ever since
  • The maximum hyper-insulation material in the coat maintains your core body heat and loses only 4 to 5-degrees over 2 hours
  • The heat outfit is being tested in the UK by Domino's UK
  • If it proves a success, you'll be able to order it along with your pizza from Domino's
  • The company says the Heat Suit is practical and promises that it will keep you as warm and toasty as their dough.
