New Research by Michigan State University Source:  Michigan State University Track Team Sports Lead to Better Grades and Retention Rates A new study by researchers at Michigan State University adds to the growing body of evidence that participating in recreational sports helps to improve grades and also helps students return to college for another year. 1800 Students Included The study included 1800 freshman at MSU.  The students who played intramural sports averaged 3.25 grad point averages versus 3.07 for those who didn't participate in sports activities.  Students who played sports also were 2.5 times more likely to come back to the university the next year. Right Number of Activities The findings are in the Journal of College Student Retention.  The researchers say the right number of activities are four to seven a year, ranging from intramural sports like ultimate frisbee and running to aerobics classes.

SEC Okays New Silicon Valley Stock Exchange Source:  London Stock Exchange stock image Innovation and Tech Express US regulators at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) just approved a new stock exchange.  This will give innovation companies with high growth potential the chance to list their shares outside of traditional big New York exchanges.  The exchange is called the Long-Term Stock Exchange, LTSE and is located in the Silicon Valley of California. Entrepreneur's Idea This concept of a stock exchange for new innovation companies is the creation of entrepreneur, investor and startup advisor Eric Reis.  He raised $19 million from venture capitalists to make this happen.  It will be a Silicon Valley based national securities exchange. Reis says it will promote a unique approach to governance and voting rights.  It will also reduce short-term pressure on these emerging public companies.  The companies will also be able to dual list their shares on the NYSE and

Freestanding Hammock-Tent Camping System Source:  LIT Outdoors Tammock - New Camping Invention This new gadget was just introduced by the company LIT Outdoors.  They call it the Tammock. It's a free standing invention:  a combination Hammock-Tent system that brings the comfort of swinging in a hammock to outdoor areas without any trees.  Or as the company puts it "brings it all down to earth". Hammock Camping System There are other tent-hammocks on the market but they require trees to be setup.  The Tammock has a freestanding tent and hammock that can be setup anyplace.  It has a waterproof rainfly providing tent protection from the rain.  The doors on each side of the tent are rollups.  It's an all in one hammock camping system, good for the beach, desert, the mountains and your backyard.  It's a brand new invention that is in the Kickstarter phase.

Novel Experiment Carbon dioxide is the main contributor to global climate change.  In the Swiss Jura Mountains, there is a layer of rock that contains impermeable clay.  Scientists are trying something novel.  They're injecting carbon dioxide into the impermeable clay to see if it can be captured and doesn't leak. Lab in a Mountain This is scientific innovation being performed in a lab in a mountain.  The scientists are now pumping carbon dioxide dissolved with salter water into rock.  They want to see if the gas interacts with the clay and a fault develops in the rock and the CO2 leaks.  If it doesn't, they may have invented a new means of reducing carbon dioxide in populated areas.  A number of nations and corpor
