Zero Emissions Driving At an Inexpensive Price

At the IAA Mobility 2021 show in Munich, Volkswagen unveiled its ID Life concept electric vehicle.  VW says the concept is a preview of its upcoming, inexpensive $24,000 electric car. The Germany based automaker is in head-to-head competition with US based Tesla to bring the first, affordable, EVs to the global market in the $24,000 to $30,000 range.  The vehicles are fully electric with zero emissions.  Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a goal of bringing a small, electric car with his new battery system to market at a price starting at $25,000 in 2023.  VW is targeting a launch for its small, $24,000 electric car in 2025.  But those timeframes could radically change as this global race heats up.

Speed and Power

The ID Life is a concept show car.  The exterior resembles a squared VW Beetle or a Mini.  It is made of recycled materials.  The vehicle has a front-wheel drive, 172 kW drivetrain, powered by a 57 kWh battery pack.  It has over 200 miles of EPA range on a single charge and it accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.

VW's Vision of the Future

VW says the ID Life is their idea of next-generation, fully electric urban mobility.  The concept car reflects the small electric vehicle that VW will launch on or before 2025 in the 200,000 Euro price range or $23,696.  VW believes that the customers of tomorrow don't want to just get from point A to point B in their car.  They are more interested in the experiences that the car can offer.  VW says the ID Life is their answer to that new megatrend.  The new EV will come with a video game console and projector as well as a projector screen that extends from the dash panel when needed.  To take a look at Edward Kane's latest book "Cool New Vehicles Revealed", go to https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asin=B09CN2QWT4&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_9RMDH3Y23NRQFVYHA0EG  I co-authored the book with Ed.
