NEW, SMART CAR COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

  • Czech Republic automaker Skoda is developing new car-to-pedestrian communications technology to help people cross the street more safely
  • Animated messages & symbols are displayed on the car's illuminated grille, indicating, for example, that it's not safe to cross the street
  • The system is unique technology using LED strip holders that are programmable & can be controlled separately
  • Skoda is also developing a robot called IPA2X that is designed to help elderly, kids and the disabled to cross a road safely
  • The robot is more than 6.5 feet tall & loaded with sensors to detect oncoming cars
  • It flashes information for pedestrians & approaching cars on its infotainment display
  • Skoda plans to enable the robot to also issue audio warnings
  • Skoda is testing both new technologies in Italy & the Czech Republic and expects to have them fully operational by 2025
  • The company is working with the Technical University of Munich & Institute of Informatics, Robotics & Cybernetics at Czech Technical University in Prague on the new technology.

  • Biotech companies Merck & Moderna are very close to a breakthrough cancer vaccine and drug therapy combination for melanoma
  • Moderna's mRNA powered cancer vaccine, when combined with the Merck's blockbuster immunotherapy drug Keytruda, prevents more melanoma patients from relapsing back into the deadly form of skin cancer than when they just used Keytruda
  • The combination cut the risk of recurrence in melanoma patients by 44%
  • This unique cancer treatment is at the midpoint of trial testing & testing will continue before it goes to market
  • But the results so far are very promising & indicate that a cancer vaccine can keep cancer patients in remission - something that patients & doctors have been hoping for forever.

EUROPE'S SPACE-BASED SOLAR POWER PLANT

  • European Space Agency (ESA) just signed contracts for 2 concept studies for big, commercial scale, solar power plants based in space
  • This is a big move in ESA's Solaris Initiative to harvest huge amount of solar energy from space & transmit it to Earth
  • The contracts have been awarded to Arthur D. Little of Cambridge & Thales Alenia Space Italy
  • By the end of 2023, the studies will inform ESA with data on the feasibility, risks & benefits of building a full-scale solar power plant in space starting in 2025
  • A big question to be answered is the best way to send the energy gathered in space back to Earth
  • Transmission options include using lasers, wireless, radio frequency transmissions or simply beaming the solar energy to solar farms on Earth
  • For all of us who are believers in green clean energy, this is a very exciting & highly innovative endeavor that could significantly cut carbon emissions & significantly reduce Climate Change over time.
