Sony's First Electric Cars in 2025

There has been a seismic move in the global electric car marketplace.  Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony is teaming up with global automotive giant Honda to develop and manufacture electric cars.  The new cars will go to market and be ready for purchase in 2025.  This partnership makes Sony the latest big player in the rapidly accelerating electric car business.  And the throw-weight of the synergistic technologies that the two partners bring to the table is mammoth.

Sony EVs

Sony first announced its interest in developing electric cars in 2020.  At CES 2022, it unveiled a stunning electric SUV concept called Vision-S 02.  It can carry 7 people and includes the capacity for them to play video games made for the Sony Playstation 5 console.  Rather than following the path to develop and manufacture the e-SUV alone, Sony Mobility is now partnering with Honda which will put the vehicle into production in its own factories.

Brand New Company

Sony and Honda intend to form a new company for the Sony EVs later this year.  The new company will likely become an electric vehicle powerhouse that brings together their respective technological and business strengths. Sony has highly advanced expertise in imaging technology and digital sensors that are critical to the development of autonomous driving. Sony also has a treasure trove of displays, entertainment and infotainment products perfect for smart car interiors. Honda is a global leader in highly advanced automotive technologies and has a valuable global network of dealerships and service providers.  This partnership could be a technological breakthrough for the future of driving.

Tech Details on Sony's Vision-S 02

The Vision-S 02 can carry 7 people, rides on 20 inch tires and weighs 5,467 pounds.  It is powered by two electric motors. Each motor produces 200 kilowatts or 268 horsepower.  The e-SUV's top speed, according to Sony, will be 112 mph.  The battery size, the range on a charge and the price have not been released by Sony as of yet. The infotainment center is the full width of the front dashboard. It's composed of three integrated screens.  And for passengers in the rear of the car, there are multimedia displays.  The design of the vehicle is sleek, smooth and stunning.  And, it provides a ride with zero emissions.
