  • Japanese scientists are investigating the ways in which musical notes elicit bodily sensations and emotions. It appears that the impact of music on the body and mind are profound. Here are some key findings:
  • New research is being done by scientists at the University of Tokyo
  • Upshot: Music is experienced throughout the entire body and may significantly contribute to stress relief and enhance mental health
  • Over 500 people were asked to listen to 8 tunes and map where they felt the music and the results are surprising
  • Tunes that were more surprising were felt in the heart
  • Specifically, there was a link between sensations in the heart and aesthetic appreciation, promoting feelings of pleasure and less anxiety
  • Predictable music was felt in the stomach
  • The stomach sensations were associated with feelings of predictability and a decline of feelings of anxiety
  • Key areas of the body impacted by music:  brain, heart and stomach
  • From Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect" to Ralph Vaughn Williams' ethereal beauty "The Lark Ascending", music can uplift our spirits in so many ways! So, what songs or symphonies touch you in your heart, mind, body and soul?
  • As for me, there are so many favorites that provide great comfort, new perspectives and joy.
