  US Startup Beats Tesla, GM, Ford and more                                        Source:  Rivian Tough Pickup That Wades Through Water & Climbs Hills of Sand EV startup Rivian is the first automaker to produce, launch and market an electric pickup truck.  The US electric truck maker beat out the world's #1 electric vehicle maker Tesla, along with GM, Ford and others.  The company's first R1T pickup truck for a customer drove off the assembly line at the Rivian plant in Normal, Illinois.  More are rolling off the production line and the company says they are saleable to customers.  In fact, they are "ready for sale in all 50 states".  The R1T has a range of 317 miles on a charge and prices start at $67,500.  As you can see in the photos, the e-pickup is so tough it can climb hills of sand and wade through water as high as the top of the tires.  With a deposit of $1,000, the truck can be reserved for purchase.   Powerful Vehicle But With Less Emissions Source:  GM & Corvette E-Ray Expected to Debut in 2023 GM's iconic sports car, the Corvette, is about to roll out its first, electrified model.  GM is working on a plug-in hybrid version of the C8 Vette called the E-Ray.  The next-G Vette has a radical design shift with a mid-engine layout.  Automotive reports indicate the hybrid powertrain will generate a powerful punch of 650 horsepower.  The EV is expected to debut in 2023. Tech Specs & More Firsts The new Vette pairs a 6.2 liter LT2 V-8 engine with an e-booster electric motor on the front axle.  The e-Ray won't produce any emissions until it is travelling over 35 mph.  For the first time in Corvette's history, the vehicle will have four-wheel drive.  Automotive experts say that the ability to send power to both axles should improve the car's performance even further.  Interestingly, GM is making no comment about this greatly anticipated new vehicle.

  Ford's Long Anticipated Electric Pick-Up to Debut Source:  Ford A Truck That Can Power Your Home During a Power Outage The long anticipated Ford F-150 electric pickup truck got a name today - F-150 Lightning.  Ford says it will unveil the EV on May 19th and released a teaser image of the Lightning insignia.  The company provided little details on the capabilities and the design of Lightning.  But Ford CEO Jim Farley released a statement saying the F-150 is now going digital and fully electric.  He added several fascinating details.  He said Lightning can power your house during a power outage.  The EV is faster than the original F-150 Lightning Performance truck and it will constantly improve through over the air updates. It is a fully autonomous, driverless, electric shared vehicle designed to transport a family or friends to an event or destination. It's loaded with luxury features and amenities that you would expect from an high end, very advanced high tech, limousine service.   Microsoft, GM and Cruise Partner on Self-Driving Cars                                                  Source:  GM's Cruise A New Vision for Autonomous Driving This is a brand new vision of the future of autonomous driving.  A new partnership among Microsoft, GM and Cruise.  San Francisco based startup Cruise just received a huge infusion of cash to develop autonomous cars.  Microsoft has joined GM, which is Cruise's majority shareholder, along with Honda and other institutional investors to pump $2 billion worth of investment into Cruise and its autonomous technology.  Their intent is for Cruise to take their self-driving vehicles to market for widespread commercialization. The investment infusion brought Cruise's market valuation to $30 billion. That is very close to Waymo, the self-driving company owned by Google's parent Alphabet, valued at slightly over $30 billion. GM's Electric Vehicles Spending to Increase 35%                                        Source:  Cadillac Lyriq GM Also Increasing Battery Production GM is going full throttle on electric vehicles.  Challenging Tesla's EV leadership, GM just announced it is accelerating planned spending on future EV's to more than $27 billion.  That is 35% more than planned.  And to accommodate the increased production of EV's, it will simultaneously increase its battery production. The announcement was made by GM CEO Mary Barra. Electric Vehicle Push By Global Automakers Last week, Volkswagen announced that it is investing $86 billion in electric vehicle development and production.  Tesla continues to leave the competition behind as it dominates global EV sales.  For GM, CEO Barra plans to offer EV's across the entire product line from vehicles costing less than $30,000 to those costing more than $100,000.   GM's New eCrate Conversion Kit                                                                      Source:  GM 1977 KS  Blazer & Kit From Gas Guzzler to Electric Vehicle GM has come up with a great new idea.  It's a kit to convert gas guzzling cars to electric.  It's called the eCrate conversion kit.  And GM just demonstrated the results on a 1977 KS Blazer-E converted to electric power.  The kit uses Chevy Blazer EV batteries.  The big question is:  how difficult is the kit to use? GM Says Easy Electric Conversion GM claims the eCrate makes for easy electric conversions.  GM also says there is tremendous demand for this upcoming kit as people want to build their own electric vehicles.  They'll sell it through Chevrolet Performance starting in the second half of 2021. eCrate Components The kit is formally known as the Electric Connect and Cruise package and it's based on the Chevy Bolt EV powertrain.  The kit contains: 60 kWh battery pack 200 horsepower elect
