All Electric Flying Taxi Rides

California based Archer Aviation has become the latest entrant in the very hot, eVTOL, flying taxi, global market.  Archer just debuted its all electric, flying taxi Maker, which already has landed a huge, $1 billion order from United Airlines.  The interest in vehicles that are zero emissions, take off and land like a helicopter and fly like a plane is rapidly accelerating.  Investors and aviation companies are chasing after a piece of the action.  In particular, aviation companies are seeking new urban air mobility markets while facing intense pressure from regulators and the public to decarbonize their operations through battery powered electric flying vehicles.  The flying taxi market is valued in the billions of dollars and presents a prime opportunity.

Tech Specs

Maker is a piloted, 4 passenger vehicle that is in the certification process with the FAA.  The prototype that just debuted is a 2-seater. The flying taxi can fly 150 mph, with a 60 mile range and a price per passenger of $3-$4 per passenger mile.  For example, a trip from Manhattan to Kennedy Airport would cost $50 to $70.00. The flying taxi trip would take 5 to 7 minutes as opposed to an hour to an hour and a half by car.  Commercial operations are expected to launch in Los Angeles and Miami in 2024.  The company's goal is to create a new, mass market transportation solution of flying taxis, ferrying commuters in and around cities.  The skies will be getting crowded as there are a number of hot, new eVTOL companies including the UK's Vertical Aerospace and Germany's Lilium getting ready for take off and also going public.
